BioNTech is establishing an mRNA research and manufacturing facility in Melbourne based on its BioNTainer modular mRNA manufacturing approach to support R&D and the evaluation of mRNA vaccine candidates in clinical trials in Australia, with the aim of strengthening Australia’s mRNA ecosystem. We are seeking a highly skilled and innovative Analytical Senior Scientist to join our team. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in designing, developing, and executing experiments to analyze and characterize new mRNA vaccines and therapies. The role will make a scientific leadership contribution towards research and development objectives in RNA production, formulation, and analytical science. Your main responsibilities are:

  • Establish, develop, and perform analytical procedures for the characterization of mRNA therapeutics and lipid formulations.
  • Troubleshoot existing assays and devise new methods to improve analytical capabilities.
  • Lead the establishment, development, and execution of analytical methods for mRNA therapeutics in readiness for technology transfer into manufacturing operations.
  • Manage and maintain analytical equipment, ensuring optimal performance and compliance.
  • Organize and conduct analysis of research batches of mRNA using standardized procedures.
  • Design and conduct research stability studies on new mRNA vaccines and biotherapeutics.
  • Present research findings and standard documentation in a clear and professional manner.
  • Lead method transfer processes both internally and externally, ensuring seamless integration across teams and stakeholders.
  • Work closely with external research partners and internal team members in a multidisciplinary environment.
  • Interact effectively with internal and external stakeholders and partners to drive project success.

 

What you have to offer:

  • PhD in Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Biochemistry, or a related field. 
  • In-depth knowledge of analytical procedures and biophysical testing of mRNA vaccines and therapeutics.
  • Practical, hands-on experience in chemical, physicochemical, or bioanalytical characterization approaches, including at least one of the following methods: Capillary Electrophoresis (CE) High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) Spectrophotometric techniques Chromatographic techniques Molecular biology techniques e.g. DNA/RNA sequencing & library prep, qPCR, dot blot
  • Strong team player with excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to thrive in a dynamic and multidisciplinary environment.
  • Familiarity with research and development requirements for pharmaceutical products.
  • Experience with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) is highly desirable.
  • Proven ability to organize, evaluate, and present scientific data effectively.
