BioNTech is establishing an mRNA research and manufacturing facility in Melbourne based on its BioNTainer modular mRNA manufacturing approach to support R&D and the evaluation of mRNA vaccine candidates in clinical trials in Australia, with the aim of strengthening Australia’s mRNA ecosystem. We are seeking a highly skilled and innovative Research and Development Scientist to join our team. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in designing, developing, and executing experiments to develop new mRNA vaccines and therapies. The role will contribute towards research and development objectives in RNA production, formulation, and analytical science. This position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge scientific advancements and drive innovation in a collaborative and dynamic environment.
Your main responsibilities are:
- Design, develop, and execute experiments to support research and development objectives in the production of novel mRNA vaccines and therapeutics.
- Analyse and interpret experimental data to draw meaningful conclusions and provide actionable insights, particularly in RNA production, formulation, and analytical science.
- Develop and optimize assays, methodologies, and tools to improve efficiency and accuracy in research processes.
- Support the development, implementation, and troubleshooting of new technologies and methodologies in the R&D environment.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure alignment with project goals and timelines.
- Prepare detailed technical reports, presentations, and documentation to communicate findings to stakeholders.
- Contribute to the creation and maintenance of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure consistency and compliance in workflows.
- Maintain a safe and efficient laboratory working environment, including undertaking shared cleaning duties and the procurement and organization of materials, reagents, and consumables.
- Stay updated on advancements in scientific research and emerging technologies to drive innovation in R&D processes.
- Train and mentor team members on experimental techniques, tools, and best practices
What you have to offer:
- Relevant degree in Life Sciences, Chemistry, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field. (Applicants with an advanced degree (e.g. PhD or Master’s) are encouraged to apply)
- Proven research and development experience in biotechnology with a strong background in experimental design and data analysis.
- Experience with DNA/RNA production or lipid nanoparticle formulation preferred.
- Proficiency in using analytical tools and software relevant to the field of research.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
- Strong organizational and documentation skills, with attention to detail.
- Effective communication skills to present complex scientific data to diverse audiences.
- Experience in developing SOPs and training team members is a plus.
