Become a member of the BioNTech Family!

Based in Cambridge, MA and Gaithersburg, MD. We are committed to improving the health of people worldwide with our fundamental research and our work in the area of development of immunotherapies utilizing the full potential of the immune system to fight cancer, infectious diseases and other serious diseases. We believe in scientific rigor, innovation and passion as driving forces. BioNTech was founded by scientists and physicians to translate science into survival by combining fundamental research and operational excellence.

With decades of deep immunology expertise and experience in developing and optimizing mRNA as part of its broad suite of novel technologies, the company is working with the global community to defeat life-threatening and serious diseases such as cancer, COVID-19, malaria and tuberculosis. The first ever approved mRNA vaccine was created in the labs of BioNTech in Mainz, Germany. A fully integrated immunotherapy powerhouse. We remain focused on bringing our broad pipeline of next-generation immunotherapies and vaccines to people around the world to address cancer, infectious diseases, as well as a growing list of other medical conditions. To accomplish this, we continue to be deeply rooted in science and academic research while also having built a fully integrated, global immunotherapy company with cGMP and GMP manufacturing facilities anchored around deep expertise in immunology and complemented by an expanding set of capabilities.

Senior Scientist, Computational Biology

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Primary focus will be on collaborative research with the machine learning scientists at BioNTech AI division and with other computational biologists. The research will combine structural modeling, sequence analysis and multiomics with Deep Learning to understand and predict interactions between T cell receptors (TCRs) and quantitatively link these data modalities to T cell function. These activities are essential for the success of our cell therapy programs
  • This role involves sustained hands-on contributions to the conceptualization of the proposed modeling efforts, design of computational experiments and wet-lab data requirements, data collection and stratification, followed by initiating and carrying out detailed analysis of the results generated by the collaborative efforts to ensure high-quality, biologically meaningful and unbiased conclusions to decide on further method development
  • Contributions to authoring peer-reviewed publications, patents as well as internal presentations are expected

Requirements:

  • Ph.D. in bioinformatics, computer science, computational biology, biostatistics, applied mathematics or a related math-grounded discipline with a record of publications / patents
  • Fluency in exploratory statistical analysis and data visualization techniques and statistics-informed design of (computational) experiments
  • Expertise in modern structural modeling of macromolecules and biological interpretation of structural information
  • Expertise in Deep Learning and other machine learning techniques
  • Fluency in developing robust and maintainable code in a Python scientific stack as well as testing and applying that code in a Linux environment, with fluency in R as a plus
  • Good writing and presentation style and skills in making impactful scientific visualizations to communicate own work to both peers and wet-lab stakeholders and collaborators
  • Practiced ability to discuss amicably and frankly and decide collaboratively, execute individually and share the results with others
  • Aptitude to generate ideas, take ownership of the projects through their lifecycle, initiative to proactively identify and overcome challenges

Preferred Requirements:

  • Familiarity with the basics of immunology and understanding of the molecular biology techniques relevant for the analysis of interactions and functions of the immune receptors
  • Good understanding of the best practices of reproducible research in Python or R ecosystem
