Co-op Translational Immunology

Become a member of the BioNTech Family!

Based in Cambridge, MA and Gaithersburg, MD. We are committed to improving the health of people worldwide with our fundamental research and our work in the area of development of immunotherapies utilizing the full potential of the immune system to fight cancer, infectious diseases and other serious diseases. We believe in scientific rigor, innovation and passion as driving forces. BioNTech was founded by scientists and physicians to translate science into survival by combining fundamental research and operational excellence.

With decades of deep immunology expertise and experience in developing and optimizing mRNA as part of its broad suite of novel technologies, the company is working with the global community to defeat life-threatening and serious diseases such as cancer, COVID-19, malaria and tuberculosis. The first ever approved mRNA vaccine was created in the labs of BioNTech in Mainz, Germany. A fully integrated immunotherapy powerhouse. We remain focused on bringing our broad pipeline of next-generation immunotherapies and vaccines to people around the world to address cancer, infectious diseases, as well as a growing list of other medical conditions. To accomplish this, we continue to be deeply rooted in science and academic research while also having built a fully integrated, global immunotherapy company with cGMP and GMP manufacturing facilities anchored around deep expertise in immunology and complemented by an expanding set of capabilities.

Co-op Translational Immunology

Job Summary

BioNTech US is seeking a highly motivated Co-op to join the Translational Immunology team. The team’s key goals are to understand the impact of our cutting-edge immunotherapies on the patients in our clinical trials, study the biology to understand underlying mechanisms of response and resistance, to identify biomarkers and to establish the evidence for next generation treatments. The Co-op will assist in development and execution of key assays for the immune monitoring of clinical samples. The laboratory operations will include characterization using ELISpot, MSD, flow cytometry, and other basic immunology techniques. Key responsibilities will also include maintaining general lab organization and lab inventory. If you enjoy working in a highly collaborative team to achieve mutual goals, this may be a good role for you. As part of our multi-disciplinary team, you will work closely and collaborate with other scientists in the group, as well as with other members within the research and clinical teams. A big part of your role will include working directly with clinical samples generated during BioNTech US trials to develop different immune monitoring assays and data.

The areas of responsibilities will include:

  • Develop and perform molecular and immunological assays, including DNA/RNA isolation, flow cytometry and tetramer staining on both healthy donor and patient-derived material
  • Assist in isolating immune cell populations from peripheral blood and tissue of patient-derived material and characterizing them by implementing novel immunological assays including Next Generation Sequencing technologies
  • Maintain and troubleshoot instrumentation commonly utilized by the research team
  • Assist in general laboratory maintenance for the Translational Immunology group, including inventory upkeep and maintaining a streamlined work environment
  • Analysis and presentation of results within the team and potential for presentation to broader scientific groups
  • Maintain a high standard of experimentation and record keeping
  • Work productively in a team environment and independently to deliver against timelines

  • Coursework in Biology/Biotechnology or related field, with focus or interest in immunology
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Previous experience in a laboratory (through coursework, academic lab, or previous co-op)
  • Safe lab practices and handling of biological material
  • Ability to pay attention to detail and work cross-functionally within the immunology department
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
