Based in Cambridge, MA and Gaithersburg, MD. We are committed to improving the health of people worldwide with our fundamental research and our work in the area of development of immunotherapies utilizing the full potential of the immune system to fight cancer, infectious diseases and other serious diseases. We believe in scientific rigor, innovation and passion as driving forces. BioNTech was founded by scientists and physicians to translate science into survival by combining fundamental research and operational excellence.

With decades of deep immunology expertise and experience in developing and optimizing mRNA as part of its broad suite of novel technologies, the company is working with the global community to defeat life-threatening and serious diseases such as cancer, COVID-19, malaria and tuberculosis. The first ever approved mRNA vaccine was created in the labs of BioNTech in Mainz, Germany. A fully integrated immunotherapy powerhouse. We remain focused on bringing our broad pipeline of next-generation immunotherapies and vaccines to people around the world to address cancer, infectious diseases, as well as a growing list of other medical conditions. To accomplish this, we continue to be deeply rooted in science and academic research while also having built a fully integrated, global immunotherapy company with cGMP and GMP manufacturing facilities anchored around deep expertise in immunology and complemented by an expanding set of capabilities.

Associate Scientist/ Scientist, Immunohistochemistry

Job Summary

BioNTech US is seeking a highly motivated Associate Scientist/Scientist, Immunohistochemistry to join the Translational Immunology team. The Translational Immunology team’s goals are to understand the impact of our cutting-edge immunotherapies on patients in our clinical trials, study the biology to understand underlying mechanisms of response and resistance, to identify biomarkers, and to establish the evidence for next generation treatments. This role involves performing immunohistochemical assays, with a focus on multiplex IHC, to analyze protein expression in FFPE patient tumor biopsies generated during BioNTech clinical trials. If you are excited about the opportunity to work independently and have project ownership, while working on a highly collaborative team to achieve mutual goals, this may be a good role for you.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and perform novel tissue-based immunohistochemical assays (both chromogenic and fluorescent) on FFPE tissue using manual and automated staining platforms
  • Design and execute multiplex immunofluorescence (IF) assays to characterize the expression, distribution, and localization of tissue biomarkers in normal and tumor tissues
  • Optimize new probes for RNAscope in situ hybridization assays
  • Perform new antibody optimization and validation on human tissue samples
  • Conduct image acquisition and quantitative analysis on multiplex IF and chromogen stained samples
  • Analyze and present results within the team and to broader scientific groups both internally and externally with minimal supervision
  • Assist in daily lab operations including equipment maintenance, managing inventory and reagent preparation
  • Record experimental procedures and results in an electronic lab notebook (eLN)

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree with significant knowledge in immunology
  • Minimum of 4 year’s experience in multiplex IF staining.
  • Must have strong background in IHC staining (chromogenic and fluorescence) with 4+ years’ experience in multiplex IF staining. Staining experience must include both manual and automated staining platforms
  • Experience with microscopy, including multiplex IF, and whole slide scanning with a working knowledge of image analysis software. Experience using Akoya image acquisition/analysis software platform, as well as HALO and Image J strongly preferred
  • Experience in antibody optimization/validation and assay development
  • Must have a thorough understanding of experimental design, scientific principles and the ability to independently perform troubleshooting
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to multitask
  • Familiarity with high-plex protein staining platforms and precision profiling techniques (Visium , GeoMx, CosMx) not required, but preferred
